Atlantis hotel is really heaven on the earth. I dream to visit it once in my life.

every time I purchase gas I donate a little more to this standard of living for those who already far exceed anything will ever have. It doesn't seem right that so many are dying from starvation while these people are extolling the richness of their accommodation.

Obviously you will never afford it so you resort to pathetic jealousy, pure and simple.

    PS. It is fantastic.

ahh, dubai... in a race against itself to create the biggest, baddest set of ruins in the near future. most likely the very near future. as soon as the oil age ends, there will be no reason to live in or visit dubai.

  14. Ripley // October 15, 2008 10:22 PM

Having spent 4 years in Africa helping the poor and witnessing starvation, malaria deaths, etc, I see where Myles is coming from. I think it's ok to communicate a frustration or grievance with the current structure within our culture that embraces (over-the-top) pleasure at the expense of people's lives (the "less fortunate") and/or their quality of life. Everyone critiquing Myles has obviously never missed a meal in their lives, and I find it despicable that anyone would attack/critique myles for stating an opinion that hints of concern for someone other than himself.

That said, that's a pretty incredible hotel!

  15. Angie // October 16, 2008 3:22 AM

Yes, it is beautiful. And it would be wonderful to be able to visit someday. However, these kinds of accommodations are built as toys for the rich. It's not that they're worth the money they cost to stay in them but the fact that they know that the wealthy will pay their price ...simply because they can. It's not any different then paying professional football players to play or actors millions of dollars to act. Are they worth that kind of money....NO. But people who are willing to fork out their hard earned money for ridiculously priced tickets only makes them richer. I can afford to pay for some luxuries...(but I don't) simply because I'm not willing to pay their price. Now, what if everyone had the same kind of thought!

  16. randyolli // October 16, 2008 4:08 AM

In response to myles who said "every time I purchase gas I donate a little more to this standard of living for those who already far exceed anything will ever have." Dubai has no oil. the standard of living they enjoy there is the result of a thriving comercial sector that has been fostered by a favorable tax system. Your gas money goes elswhere.

  17. Nex Ut // October 17, 2008 12:15 AM

The sad thing is I remember a documentary of this when it was being built. The workers lived in less than humane conditions to make this possible. When ever you have extreme wealth it comes at the expense of some one else. I am all for responsible capitalism but I will never support a two class society. Unless the extremely wealthy decide to start doing there own dirty work.

  18. stevesalt // October 17, 2008 10:58 AM

I grew up in the Emirates and can agree on the overindulgence that exists there, even more now than when I was there 10 years ago. Just an interesting tidbit though that less than 8% of Dubai's GDP is from oil. It is all investments, trade, tourism, etc. Abu Dhabi, on the other hand, has tons of the stuff (they are decidedly more thoughtful with their growth though, at least for now).

It's a fantastic place to be in a holiday...(for the rich) and a dream place (for dreamers like me unfortunately can't afford that kind of luxurious place..) but we must think sometimes..the cost of staying there even for a day or a night could cost a 3 year salary of an employee...(to much money wasting that is..)

In response to Angie // October 16, 2008 3:22 AM , there is an Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas, too (where I live). It is very similar to this one, but not quite as extravagant from what I can tell from the photos. The prices are still not what I consider reasonable, though, and it surprises me every day how many "normal Joes" pay these amounts for a holiday. HOWEVER, if the rich people have the money and are willing to pass it on to stay in a place of their choosing, why not? It's their money, after all, and at least it provides employment for some people, and the staff/guest ratios at these places are NOT low.

  25. Anonymous // November 13, 2008 11:45 PM

Someone I do not know discovered that asbestos is bad for us, and so I was not exposed to it as much as people who lived in less safety-conscious times. I am NOT comparing this gorgeous temple to Greed to these discoveries. I am saying that even if all we can do is wonder at this building most of us will never enter, our lives are enriched by the experience and we are enjoying the fruits of a civilization thta cdab create suxh marvels. We have just been back and it was even more awesome... it makes the daily grind just a little easier to bear knowing I might get back there again in 3 or 4 years time. Next time I am aiming for the Atlantis. It's good to dream a little....

  43. anjie // January 6, 2009 7:03 AM

Actually, Atlantis hotels (Dubai and Bahamas) are not that expensive - a few hundred dollars a night will get you a beautiful room. Of course, they also have suites that run into the tens of thousands of dollars per night, but those are out of my league! And there's nothing that says you have to stay at the hotel - we stay in my sister-in-law's condo when we're in Dubai, and just go to dinner at Atlantis!

  44. Disco Jess // January 6, 2009 9:33 AM

uh......anje, I think it's interesting that you find "a few hundred dollars a night" to be relatively affordable. I wish we all had the type of properity you've apparently enjoyed, and your sister in law as well.

Not to go too far into politics, but is everyone still A O K with the wealthy receiving tax deductions for being wealthy? Seems backwards.

Anyway, enjoy Dubai, I'm going to go count the foreclosure signs in the neighborhood.

  45. Disco Jess // January 6, 2009 9:37 AM

    To Anje:

Hmm, my other post disappeared. Classic.

It's interesting that you find "a few hundred dollars a night" to be "not that expensive". I wish I had the funds you have, or that your sister in law apparently has, to purchase a condo in Dubai.

Is everyone still OK with the rich receiving tax deductions and benefits, just for being wealthy? Seems backwards.

Anyway, enjoy your numerous and bountiful times in Dubai while the rest of us watch our homes fold inward and the businesses around us crumble. Best wishes.

If this was built from obscene oil profits, and burning oil is the major contributer to global warming, then these "islands" will be under water in a few years. Ironic, or what?
Global warming is progrssing alot faster than every "computer generated models" have predicted. (they can't take every contributing factor into consideration)
In the end, nature will prevail. As always.

  47. Disco Jess // January 8, 2009 9:43 AM

I was JUST thinking about global warming this morning, and how I wondered, when the glaciers melt, and the sea rises, what (if any) effect with the lowering salt content of the water have on marine life? We have a salt water tank in our house, and I know that when the salt levels are just a LITTLE off, bad things happen FAST. We've lost fish to this risky business.

Oops, that's off topic. Um.. Yes, dubai. lovely.

  50. Anonymous // January 14, 2009 6:34 AM

Magnificent, I guess, but tacky. This country has no culture: they've taken Las Vegas and just made it bigger. But the citizens of this country/city would, I'm sure take acception to my opinion, and say their culture is beautiful and goes back eons. Then why do they take everything the western world invented and simply make it bigger? Why not come up with something of their own? Truly their own? They think flashy shows of money is impressive. Discovering treatments for diabetes is impressive; inventing the telephone is impressive; flying to the moon is impressive. Giant hotels, not so much.

  53. The Doc // January 18, 2009 1:57 PM

Dubai has only been in existence for about 50 years - prior to that it was a nomadic fishing village with a small fort - and even that history is only a century or two.

In that 50 years, with only a small reservoir of oil as a starter, they have built a country and created and dispensed wealth to the benefit of themselves and countless others - far more so than many other "first world" countries.

The building of that hotel has generated more revenue to help many, including the under priveleged - more than if it had not been built.

    Philnathropic capitalism works. Socialism doesn't.

  62. Anonymous // February 16, 2009 7:08 PM

Having lived in Bahrain and visited Dubai many times I can offer this. That place was built by thousands of workers from India, Pakistan, and the Far East. Those men sent the vast majority of the wages they earned (many times more than they could have earned in their home countries) home to their families. True, they didn't earn much but their earning were counted in the tens of dollars a day, not tens of cents. Today it's staffed by ex-pates doing the same thing. The system is not perfect by any means but this extravagance does have a beneficial, long-term affect in many places.

  63. Ray Wilkerson // February 18, 2009 1:18 AM

Guys, you all are missing the point. Dubai is doing these things BECAUSE they se the writing on the walls about oil and gas. THey realize that it is not sustainable, so they are converting their economy to a tourism based economy similar to the Carribean, or the Bahamas. The prince is burning the riches from oils to hedge against future decline in oil revenues. This is not excess, this is future-proofing an economy.

  64. susan // February 20, 2009 3:33 AM

As for starving people vs rich people, it has always been and will always be. Like to think we all select our own bed to live in -long before we are born. We all have different purposes to be here and thus different agendas.
All those whom think we are just some advanced species of apes, climb in a tree; I am quite sure you will find it as satisfying as this Atlantis hotel.

In response to those responding to Myles: You're fools...plain and simple. Myles made a very valid comment. It is true that when he makes purchases of gas that he is providing profits for other people...also it's not right that some people are starving while others are drowning in luxury. It's funny, that in your self righteous views of yourselves being open minded and just in your thinking...you're merely showing off your ignorance which you believe yourself to be free from. It's funny....kinda like atheist criticizing those with religious beliefs for being fanatical in their faith...when in fact they themselves are fanatical about their own beliefs which are based merely on faith. For we know not the truth of reality....to assume we do, be it by believing there exist a god(s) or as atheist believe....it's all the same.ggen

    See? Dubai...not the Bahamas.

Myles, thanks to capitalism, you have the ability to vote for or against this hotel by either giving them or dollars or not.

Also, by using your logic, you'd better not go on vacation.

It doesn't seem "right", after all, that you are allowed time off from your job when there are so many people dying from starvation.

You'd better not have a savings account either. It doesn't seem "right" that you would save a single penny of your income, as starving people could use that money. How dare you, sir.

Also, to that last anonymous poster...just so you know, when you purchase ANYTHING, you generally provide profits to SOMEONE. I find you to be close-minded to capitalism. If you are so fired up about helping the destitute, you'd better spend your life in Mumbai or elsewhere. If you are feeling any comfort being where you are at the moment, how dare you criticize anyone else, sir.

    REALITY -

What really is reality? Something you and i experienced with our human senses - everything else has to be based upon faith. Take this Atlantis Hotel in Dubal, is it really real? Many say it does not exist, but there is one in the Bahama's.

As far as what I think about when I purchase gas, I just hope it gets me from point A to point B, and the same when I buy anything from Walmart to keep me alive. The reality of these purchases are most definitely personal and necessary, no manner whom is straving and whom is getting rich.

The biggest reality, is what we are today is totally based upon what you and i did in the past, no manner whom we are!!

Is Atlantis Hotel in Dubal real? How many have been there? For that manner is Atlantis real, or just a figment of Plato's imagination? How many has been there??

  75. Anonymous // March 12, 2009 6:49 AM

Those of you slating Dubai have never been there.

I have been there but only for a few days and what I saw really impressed me. I never imagined what it would be like until I arrived, it was a big surprise.

In fact, in that short space of time I was so impressed with the place I have actually applied for a job there.

Yes, it's desert, but there can be no denying the achievements that have been made in Dubai.

Give credit where credit is due at least Sheik was smart enough to see that oil wasn't going to cut it so he turned the desert into a top tourist destination and great opportunity for businesses. Something that many thought impossible. If this was in America what would be the response???? give them a break we have had our share of success over the years so stop putting others down especially when they succeed.

  81. Vacation // April 7, 2009 12:45 AM

Well said Ray Wilkerson. Some people just don't get it but Sheik saw it coming a long time ago and he decided to make Dubai a tourist destination and also an areas conducive for businesses to thrive. Besides what do the poor have to do with this. This is a smart man looking out for his country thats it and so far he has done a pretty awesome job.

  82. Anonymous // April 11, 2009 7:31 PM

For all the people out there pissed at UAE for 'getting rich off our gas money'

FYI Dubai has worked hard to welcome international business and investments - so most of the projects are private investment AND their economy is based on the services sector NOT on oil. Acoording to a recent AME report only 6% of GDP comes from oil, far less than the U.S.! They rely on trade, real estate, and financial services.

    This hotel is awesome!
